Founded in 1932, Perkins is one of the world’s earliest engine manufacturers with an annual output of nearly 400,000 engines. Though it entered China’s generator market relatively late, it quickly seized considerable market share and achieved remarkable results.

Working Principle

It operates in the same way as ordinary diesel generator sets. The diesel engine drives the generator to convert diesel energy into electric energy.
Inside the diesel cylinder, clean air filtered by air cleaner fully mixes with high-pressure atomized diesel injected by fuel injectors. Piston upward movement compresses the mixture to raise temperature rapidly up to diesel ignition point. The mixture burns violently and expands sharply to push the piston downward, which is defined as power stroke.
Each cylinder works in sequence. Thrust acting on pistons drives crankshaft rotation via connecting rods. The brushless synchronous alternator is coaxially connected with the crankshaft. Driven by the diesel engine, the generator rotor generates induced electromotive force based on electromagnetic induction principle, and electric current is produced through closed load circuit.

Maintenance Methods

Cooling System Maintenance

Add coolant before initial startup. Open the air vent valve on the upper cooling system, fill coolant slowly from the radiator filler neck until no bubbles escape from the vent. Fill coolant below the filler neck without overfilling. Close the vent valve and open the stop valve on water filter base to mix DCA4 additive into the system.
Qualified coolant consists of purified water, antifreeze and DCA4 additive, with the ratio of 50% purified water, 50% antifreeze and 0.5 unit DCA4 additive per liter. It can be used all year round and last for two consecutive years.

Lubrication System Maintenance

Fill engine oil via oil filler with the engine placed horizontally. Check oil level after oil fully flows into the oil sump for accurate reading. Fill clean engine oil into each oil filter before installation.
Select proper viscosity grade and API performance grade. Multi-grade oil is recommended for its wide applicable temperature range and about 30% lower consumption than single-grade oil. High-grade engine oil ensures full engine protection throughout the oil change cycle as additives deplete gradually.
Recommended Oil Grade:

  • Ambient temperature above -5℃: 15W-40 CF4, CG4, CF4/SG or CG4/SH

  • Ambient temperature below -5℃: 10W-30 CF4, CG4, CF4/SG or CG4/SH


    Series B & C engines must adopt CF4/SG or CG4/SH grade oil.


Perkins officially recommends Blue Supreme engine oil (15W-40, CG4/SH), specially formulated to match Perkins engine characteristics, which effectively extends oil change interval and reduces oil consumption.

Fuel-saving Tips

  1. Diesel Purification: Commercial diesel contains minerals and impurities. Let diesel stand still for sedimentation and filter with funnel screen during refueling. Regularly clean or replace diesel filters to avoid uneven fuel supply and poor atomization that cause power drop and higher fuel consumption.

  2. Carbon Deposit Removal: Regularly inspect and clear carbon deposits accumulated on valves, valve seats, injectors, turbochargers, intercoolers and piston tops to cut down fuel consumption.
